Living a Medieval Fantasy in Gruyeres, Switzerland
Since there's not really a bus from the Gruyeres train station, you need to trudge up the mountainside ten minutes to find yourself in the quaint Swiss village of Gruyeres. At the top of this snowy, winding path perches a restored, medieval castle, the Chateau de Gruyeres where you can peek into the past and imagine just what it was like to live during those times. The walls and windows are still painted with enchanting detail by past tenants. There are also exhibits of armor, royal garments, and contemporary fantasy art—and a fascinating, if rather corny, multimedia presentation about the centuries of rich history in Gruyeres. If you go in winter, the snow nearly blinds you with its icy beauty, coating the finely-sculpted court gardens in its pristine whiteness. It is possible to combine admission price with the Chateau and the Museum HR Giger, which is just down the hill a bit.
