Launching Into the Canals in Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Set on a remote strip of land on the northern Caribbean coast, Casa Marbella is worth seeking out as an alternative to the area's larger lodges. The affordable bed and breakfast sits opposite the village's church, and has its own dock overlooking Tortuguero's signature canals at the edge of the national park. Just a few hundred meters away lies the beach, where, at night, you see giant sea turtles lumber ashore to safely deposit their eggs. Owner Daryl Loth leads early-morning boat tours of the rainforest; even at 6 a.m., his enthusiasm is infectious as he gestures toward toucans and howler monkeys in the branches above, telling you stories about their migration patterns, hunting habits and history in the region.
