Getting Spooked at Carmel Mission Basilica in Carmel, CA
Stroll onto the grounds of the Carmel Mission, and you'll immediately feel at peace. The gardens are lovely, and the old, discolored facades evoke a period of the past that feels tangible. Walk through the chapel and deep hidden interiors, however, and feel a shiver travel down your spine. It's almost too quiet, and a bit eerie, while the whiff of candles mixed with the scent of an old church make you feel like you're not alone in some chambers. Spooky or not, the mission captures history, as well as the life of its founder, Junipero Serra, quite beautifully through its architecture and spirit.
