Swilling New York's Most Awarded Beers in Pleasantville, NY

At the dark wooden counter, several searching noses sniff from goblets as a man talks American oak barrels and tannins and notes of wet leather. But there are no honeymooners, no flower-lined gardens, no muted conversation, and certainly no copper-plated sobriety spittoons. At Captain Lawrence Brewing, free weekend tours serve seasonal beers that are as respected as wines (its Rosso e Marrone got a 95 rating in Wine Enthusiast Magazine) but wash down with a decidedly different attitude. Trains from New York City take about an hour, and the brewery’s an easy walk from the station, making it perfect (if a little less romantic) day-trip alternative to wine country.
