Standing Atop the World in Phoenix, Arizona
Your knees might groan on the way up, but your senses will thank you once you take in your first sweeping 360 panoramic view of the valley that unfolds at the summit. Peaking out at 2,704 feet, Camelback Mountain’s bulging red sandstone humps are a distinct and familiar landmark to residents in the East Valley of Phoenix, and it’s no secret that this is one of the best places to get your head above the clouds without leaving the city. Although the Summit Trail is well-marked with signs and handrails, and well-worn from the heavy use of weekend warriors, it’s a doozy, gaining 1,264 feet in only 1.2 miles of climbing. Get your heart moving, feel the breeze through your hair, get a crow’s-eye view of your backyard—and be prepared to pamper your knees later in the day.
