Strolling Historic Grounds in Cambridge, England

The University of Cambridge was founded in the 13th century, and each piece of the historic campus has a fascinating story to tell. Plan your own tour of the University and town, and explore subjects like Tudor Cambridge, green spaces, Victorian Cambridge, and clocks & sundials. One highlight is the private diary of Samuel Pepys, one of the most important primary sources of information about the English Restoration period. Many Cambridge streets are closed to traffic, making for a joyful walking environment.

It's a scene so idyllic as to almost be cliché. And that's okay, because it continues to inspire artists and photographers to capture the essence of this romantic pastime: Punting (defined as the propelling of a square and flat-bottomed boat, by pushing down on a log pole) down the shallow River Cam, alongside the noble campus of Cambridge University. This form of leisure first started in England around 1860, became a tradition at Cambridge in early 1900, and was popular up until the 1960's, when power-boats competed for attention. But thanks to the jet age, many tourists now seek this as an added adventure. In Cambridge town, there are several commercial companies offering experienced guides (usually college students) to punt downriver, with a stop at a favorite local pub, for some sausage and ale. Now, some traditions are just grand!

Cambridge

Warning: navigating the maze of corridors in this fantastic hotel could prove a feat after an evening in the bar… or even when sober. An opulent marriage of academic yesteryear and up-to-the-minute design flourishes—such as crushed velvet cushions and magenta flock upholstery—Hotel du Vin Cambridge near the city centre city has turned what were once halls of residence and education offices into a labyrinthine warren of comfortable, stylish suites. All together it gives Cambridge something it has needed for decades—a hotel with personality.
