In a city of endlessly twisting, tapering alleys, the Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss) may be the most infamous of all. As you approach the site, charismatic children tell the legend of the daughter of a wealthy Spanish aristocrat and her destitute beau. Both were brutally murdered by her father when he discovered them kissing across the narrow alley, where each occupied a balcony. You enjoy the children’s lively retelling—some even reciting the legend in multiple languages—and are advised to kiss on the third step leading up to the balconies to avoid a penalty of bad luck.
