Feeling the Power of Stampede in Calgary, Canada
At Stampede time, all of Calgary comes alive. Since the railway was built in 1883, Calgary became the epitome of a Wild West city with ranching at the center of the economy. The Calgary Stampede was inaugurated in 1912 with sufficient prize money to gather the continent's best rodeo competitors. Today, Stampede still has the world's best at Bareback, Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling and Tie-Down Roping events. Stampede also includes the world’s premier chuckwagon event, the Rangeland Derby. Sit close and you'll feel the rumble or the 36 horses shaking the stands. At night the Grandstand Show is a spectacle of music and dancing. Around town, there's live country music, free pancake breakfasts, and many other events.
