Climbing Halfway to the Stars in San Francisco, California
Visitors may not realize there are actually three cable car lines in San Francisco, each with something different to offer. Two of the most scenic routes begin at the Powell and Market Street cable car turnaround. The Powell-Mason line provides an architectural tour of the city, as well as bites of Chinatown, North Beach, the famous hotels, and the car barn itself (with the attached Cable Car Museum). The Powell-Hyde line provides the best views of the Bay, Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world), and ends at the famous Buena Vista Cafe. The California line runs through the Financial District, and on through Nob Hill mansions. But the real thrill is the ride itself. Grab an outside seat, or hang on to a rail. The sights, smells, and wind in your face will get your in touch with this one-of-a-kind urban terrain of San Francisco.
