Dining Over Curry and Contraceptives in Bangkok, Thailand
When the waitress at Cabbages and Condoms skimps on after-dinner mints and brings prophylactics instead, don’t fret — the pad thai palace’s food “is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy.” Of all the nearby Bangkok tourist traps that celebrate (or exploit) the existence of sex (two infamous red light districts snake through Bangkok just blocks away), this one takes the most encouraging approach. The green curry garden helps fund the Population and Community Development Association — a Thai NGO promoting safe sex and HIV treatment and education. Proceeds pay for community health initiatives, water resource development and environmental conservation projects, and you experience the seedy side of Bangkok… safely. The life-sized Santa Claus in the red and black “rubber” suit says so.
