Soaking Up Old-World Elegance in Chicago, Illinois
Yes, nothing says urban and hip and ultra-modern like downtown Chicago. Yet if you wander through Grant Park at dusk, you may wonder if you’ve been whisked from the city of famous gangsters and transported to the streets of Paris instead. When Kate Buckingham visited Europe she wanted to share its graceful street fountains with her native Chicagoans—which she did on a grand scale. Today the luminous glow of Buckingham Fountain is a drop of old-world elegance in the middle of the Windy City. And while Louis XIV may have inspired the fountain’s design and a French sculptor carved the seahorse statues, the backdrop of blazing skyscrapers along Michigan Avenue is pure Chicago.
