Drenching Your Turkey, Toast, and Bacon in Louisville, Kentucky

Sip a mint julep or two under the twin spires of Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, or swill some bourbon at the Maker's Mark or Jim Beam distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, but save your stomach for the Hot Brown, God's gift to sandwiches, at its birthplace, the historic, grand Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville. Turkey, bacon strips, and tomatoes are piled atop thick white toast, drenched in a white sauce made from Parmesan and Gruyere cheeses, and then broiled until the bread toasts and the sauce bubbles. It's a beaut, all right, a foodie's delight and your diet's worst nightmare. Your stomach will love you for it.

If you could take just one photo: Brown Hotel

Treat yourself to some of Louisville's finest culinary creations by dining in The English Grill at The Brown Hotel. Executive Chef Laurent Géroli's menu consists of a few musts for this truly Louisville experience: the Hot Brown, Derby-Pie and a Bourbon Ball cocktail. A glorious martini glass filled with Mark's Mark bourbon, Godiva Dark and Frangelico, the Bourbon Ball cocktail is as much a dinner drink as it is a dessert. The smooth richness tickles your lips and thrills your taste buds. The big decision is whether to start or end your dining experience with this delicious treat. The Hot Brown is a dish of pure decadence that was invented in Louisville in 1926. This bubbly golden brown indulgence is created of roast turkey breast on toast points with Roma tomatoes that are completely smothered in a ridiculously creamy Mornay sauce with Pecorino Romano cheese then topped with crispy bacon strips and sprinkled with paprika and parsley. Your mouth cannot help but water at the sight of this amazing dish. If you think this is heaven ... just wait for dessert. For over 50 years, the Louisville tradition of the one and only Derby-Pie has been warming and satisfying the bellies of locals. While the recipe is a well-kept secret, the rich taste of this flaky-crust pie filled with chocolate chips and walnuts is legendary. A warm slice topped with some bourbon-infused whip cream is just enough to put you into a blissful food coma second to none. Bon Appétit!
