Carb-Loading at Brewers Union Local 180 in Oakridge, Oregon
Oakridge is known as a single-track, backpack, water/snowsport playground at a 1200-foot elevation in the Willamette National Forest—and you probably burned off significant carbohydrates just reading that. Replenish them at Brewers Union Local 180, steps from the new Oakridge Hostel. Picture a really cool bar that's not trying to be a Really Cool Bar: Craft beer and straightforward pub meals (vegetarian options!) served with the humility of true devotion. They've got board games and books, billiards, topo maps on the wall, a public computer in the corner, a quiet parlor, approachable hospitality, and no TV. A busload of PNW brewers, touring the area, arrived at opening time and filed through the front door with the reverence of pilgrims in a cathedral. Drawn by the stellar cask-conditioned ales, they hung out for several hours, playing pool, chatting with the owner, and happily geeking out. Follow their lead and take your time.
