Bordering With Birds at the Sea's Edge in San Diego, CA
Venture just a few miles south of San Diego for a provocative transnational experience—the westernmost edge of the US-Mexico border. Border Field State Park is home to hundreds of bird species. The nature preserve encompasses scorched frontier land, freshwater marshes, the Tijuana River Estuary, and a beach that is generally deserted aside from the occasional lone fisherman and watchful Border Patrol guards. The border fence, which snakes down the beach and out to sea, is the only place in either country where the political boundary is demarcated in this way. Tijuana’s bustling suburbs can easily be seen from the sand, along with a view of several islands off in the distance.
