Being Led by the Nose to Blue Bottle in Oakland, California
It is the aroma that will draw you in. Each day, Blue Bottle roasts its famous beans in the warehouse behind its storefront on Webster Street, the rich scent attracting local residents and workers in search of a buzz. The earthy, vaguely popcorn smell wafting into the shop only sharpens the customers’ coffee cravings. There are pastries in the small case on the counter and a view into the room next door, hosting a coffee tasting on a Tuesday afternoon. You may opt for a decadent cappuccino, espresso shapes etched into the foam on the top of your cup, or for a freshly brewed (and extremely strong) cup of the bean of the day, each one poured through its own separate filter. If you like, you can even buy a half-pound bag of beans to go. The best part of doing that? You can close your eyes and take a deep whiff of that coffee aroma anytime you want.
