Taking the Road Less Traveled at Bixby Bridge in California
Celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the Bixby Bridge serves as the gateway from Carmel to Big Sur and the Los Padres National Forest. What most travelers don't realize is that here you can embark on a back-road expedition. By taking a left turn (when heading south, of course!) onto Old Coast Road, you can get above the bridge on 14 miles of dirt road and loose gravel as you ramble through the redwoods, eventually escaping to a summit in the Los Padre National Forest that provides a panorama of Pacific Ocean views. Below in the distance, the Pacific Coast Highway is visible from this road less traveled. Though AWD or 4WD is recommended, this journey boasts photo ops and poetic beauty that make it well worth the trip. (Note: this route is impassable in wet weather.)
