Braving Hurricane Season to Snorkel the Reef in Homestead, Florida

Just a half-hour drive from South Beach, the 181,500 acres of Biscayne National Park are 95% underwater -- and worlds away from the Miami glitz. Admire historic structures like the coral rock lighthouse on Boca Chica, one of the 44 teeny-tiny islands that stud these pristine waters, or boat to Elliot Key for a hike, watching for scurrying purple and orange land crabs and rare Schaus swallowtail butterflies. Brave hurricane season in late summer and fall, when the snorkeling is best; that time of year, the healthy coral is teeming with parrotfish, blue tangs, gobies, grunts, nurse sharks, spiny lobster, and possibly manatees, dolphins and sea turtles.
