Down-to-earth Big Sur Bakery & Restaurant is known for its hearty fare. At lunchtime, look for crispy wood-fired pizzas and juicy-delicious burgers grilled over an oak-wood fire and served on housemade buns. At dinner, order anything from the brick oven, especially the crispy-skin roasted chicken — free-range, of course. The bakery opens at 8am, with still-warm pastries, crusty bread, jelly doughnuts, and organic coffee. The takeaway sandwiches are perfect for a picnic or a long car ride home, but they often sell out before noon; get here early.
The coffee at the Big Sur Bakery could be ten-day old dog water, and this would still be a fantastic spot for a visit. Luckily, the joe they serve is the good stuff from the supreme beans, and it's as fine as the other good graces of Big Sur. The main barista at the bakery has been there for years, and he's a genuinely affable guy who has an artist's way with folding the foam for your perfect cappuccino so that the intersection of coffee and milk makes an image of a leaf or some other natural object. Looks as good as it tastes!
Pair the coffee up with the deliriously dense chocolate cake they occasionally make there, and you've reached the pinnacle: search no more for the perfect food/beverage combination. The bakery's restaurant is great for lunch and dinner too, with a changing variety of carefully made dishes. Get amped up on the joe and go stroll in the eccentric Spirit Garden next door, or just gallivant anywhere in the beautiful Big Sur area.
