Basking in Nature's Beauty in a Canoe on Big River, California
With the tide flowing in and a gentle breeze at your back, take a trip up the Big River estuary. Along the way find seals at rest in the shallows, river otters playfully diving for crabs, majestic blue herons fishing or lounging near their rookery, and a multitude of other wildlife undisturbed by the gentle passage of your boat. Just over a mile up the river, buried in the marsh, lies the remains of the Maru, an old steam-powered paddlewheel boat. You’ll also see large pilings jutting up from the water, the skeletons of old trestle bridges and dams from the days when this river was a major throughway for felled redwoods. One of these docks makes a perfect place to picnic, enjoying the peaceful murmur of the river, undisturbed by the sounds of the modern world.
