Ecstatically Creaming Yourself in the Bi-Rite Ice-Cream Parlour
Bi-Rite Creamery, just off Mission Dolores Park, is a tiny ice cream parlor that also serves sundaes, cakes, and pies. Faced with a bewildering array of exotic-sounding flavors such as honey lavender, roasted banana, and brown butter pecan, it’s almost impossible to choose. The friendly staff will help, but really, it doesn’t matter: all the ice cream is so good it should be illegal. Rich and creamy, full-flavored, with a slightly gelatinous texture, this is the sort of icy treat you still crave even in the midst of winter. Which, since the flavors change regularly, is eminently justifiable. The salted caramel has a slightly burned, smoky feel that velvets your salt and sweet taste buds; combine it with brown sugar with ginger caramel swirls for extra dusky sweetness and spice; and set it all off with the slightly chewy chocolate brownie topping. Yum! But, two words: Sugar. Buzz.
