Escaping to an Oasis of Books and Local Banter on Saint Simons Island, Georgia

While waiting for the bookstore to open, "Noon or sooner," it is just as likely to be later. Beachview Books is one of the island's lasting institutions and the only place to buy and sell used books. Its most important community service might be that it is a mainstay of the grapevine. Books or chat? Over a cup of coffee and on the chintz couch, discuss one of many authors living on the island and their new books. Find an out-of-print history book shelved in one of the store's many cubbyholes and then pick the brain of owner Nancy who has lived much local history herself. But the best subject to chat about is "island drama," which is, of course, fodder for writers —or just plain snoops. The cup of coffee is de rigeur for the scuttlebutt to flow.
