Bat Cave — Charlie Geer Like

Descending into Dampness at Cuevas de Murcielagos

Climbing up to the entrance of the Cuevas de Murcielagos or Bat Caves is a pretty good indication of how far down inside the caves you´ll descend. Enter the rocky cavern, mind your head, and begin the descent into dampness, winged critters, stalactites and stalagmites. Each step down means another one back up, but each level holds interesting artifacts, information boards and an opportunity to stop and look around this interior world. Remains of Roman pots and jewellery, Neolithic paintings and engravings and bats hanging from the cavernous ceilings will thrill all that don´t mind enclosed spaces, darkness, steps and bats.

If you could take just one photo: The Colony of Bats

Bat Cave

Even if bats aren't your thing, the Bat Cave in Zuheros probably will be. Apart from the stalactites, stalagmites, and winged mammals, this cave is an archaeological treasure. Its cool, sprawling galleries are home to cultural artifacts dating as far back as the Neolithic Age, the most impressive of which are the renowned rock paintings and engravings. Remnants of jewelry, pots, and millstones attest to a Roman presence; they are thought to have used the cave as a hideout. When you've taken it all in, head back down the mountain for a stroll through lovely Zuheros. With fewer than a thousand residents, it's one of the most serene white villages in Andalucía. Visit the archaeological museum for another taste of local history—and prehistory—then feast al fresco in the shadow of a Moorish castle, overlooking hills upon hills of Andalusian olive groves.
