Horsing Around With the Locals in Bantry, Ireland
A pleasant drive away from the trendy yachts of Kinsale towards the "little nest" of Kenmare in southwest Ireland takes you past beautiful scenery and through the center of Bantry. The well-worn town leans towards Bantry Bay in a tumble of bright colors and mysterious side streets. A proud sense of gritty survival pervades the rugged old port where revolutionaries, fishermen, farmers, writers, musicians, and oilmen still share pints. If you’re lucky, you could find the town square filled with dozens of beautiful horses and their foals tethered to farmers who stand around discussing the weather and the merits of their various beasts. Children shyly approach their favorite steeds while witty street vendors sell old books, cattle sticks, and ice cream.
