If you could take just one photo: Ice on the rocks
Six thousand acres of wilderness just two hours from the Twin Cities, Banning State Park is the perfect day-trip destination for nature lovers. Eat lunch on a rock overlooking the Kettle river while far below, intrepid kayakers navigate rapids with names like Dragon's Tooth and Hell's Gate. Take a leisurely walk along the Quarry Loop trail and see the ruins from the old sandstone quarry, or take the more rugged Hell's Gate trail (not recommended for small children). Visit Wolf Creek Falls for flowing water in summer and a cascade of icicles in winter. Or cross-country ski down Deadman trail, but be careful of that tight turn at the end....
