Beholding Ballet Folklórico at Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City
Mexico City's glamorous opera house beckons passersby to "come hither" with its curvaceous beaux-arts lines and gleaming golden dome. And, once inside, it delivers on the promise with over-the-top stained glass ceilings, Italian marble galore, murals by Orozco, Tamayo, and, making itself right at home, Diego Rivera's controversial masterpiece Man, Controller of the Universe. It would be worth the price of admission just to take a seat in the Aztec-Deco theater and experience the thrill of seeing the one-of-a-kind Tiffany glass curtain (depicting a volcanic landscape) inch up over the stage. But then the Ballet Folklorico commands your attention: a whirl of colors, feet blurring, drums, horns, masks, shields, skulls, skirts, quetzal...
