Admiring Ancient Juxtapositions at Baalbek in Lebanon

To get to Baalbek, tour buses wind through the Lebanese countryside with its mountains and small villages, making the journey a rich part of the experience. Culture intermingles with politics as the views include shepherds and their flocks and Palestinian settlements. Baalbek is home to mammoth Roman ruins with mystery surrounding the techniques employed to move such huge chunks of stone nearly two thousand years ago. The most striking building at the former city of Heliopolis is the Jupiter Temple, and there are some definite photo opportunities that illustrate the size of the stone column ruins. A guide is necessary to explain the history of the site, the worship of many ancient gods, and to point out the many details that the casual visitor will miss.
