Slamming With the Pros at the Australian Open in Melbourne

For a tennis fan, there’s nothing better than the Slams. Each January, a new cycle begins in Melbourne, Australia, setting the tone for the upcoming year’s winners and losers. Just a quick trip down the Yarra River to Melbourne Park, the grounds of the Australian Open widen their doors to masses of eager, hungry fans. In Rod Laver Arena, the competition begins drawing the likes of Federer, Nadal, Roddick, Sharapova, and the Williams sisters. Melbourne has a distinctly different feel than the other Slams. It’s more laid back, and more remote, less Euro, and less certain an outcome. Let the games begin!

loungers watching the Open in Fed Square

Everyone knows the Australian Open as the year's first great tennis event, taking place each January in Melbourne. However, while you can stroll down the Yarra River and watch the matches live, the more fun (and free!) option when in town is to cop a squat in Federation Square and join the locals in Melbourne's living room. During the open, lounge chairs are placed in Fed Square on a first-come, first-served basis, and everyone grabs some of the town's famous coffee to meet up with friends and cheer on their favorite stars. You're more likely to commune with native Australians in this friendly spot than while sweating it out in an assigned seat in the auditorium, and you can always take a break to enjoy one of the nearby museums or cafes. Be sure to take a minute to appreciate the design of this controversial tourist landmark, as the colors of the square tiles were chosen specifically to emulate the natural terrain of the Australian Outback.
