Marveling at the City From Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland

While peering out at Edinburgh from Arthur’s Seat, it feels as though you could be floating along in a hot air balloon. You have the chilly breeze, the eerie quietness, the tranquility, and of course the view. It’s a pleasant hike up to the top of this mini-mountain, and can be done in an hour or two, depending on your pace and the route you take. The peak is located in Holyrood Park, which is a large, open oasis right near the heart of Edinburgh. There are some areas that seem to have the looks of a trail, but people are free to wander about wherever they like. At the top there is a little map that points out landmarks that can be seen from up here, and on a clear day there are many. Just don’t forget to bring your camera!

The rainbow when it rains.

There is something about Arthur's Seat that speaks to a newcomer, a first-time hiker or a beckoning friend. The landscape shouts at you with its bright blues and crisp greens. The grass itself hints at colors unseen before when you become intimate by ripping off your shoes to feel the virescent surface. The breeze whispers secrets of what you'll find at the top, encouraging you to whip out your camera and go around the bend. You climb higher, and the breeze becomes a wind, roaring secrets of clarity and self-reflection. You reach the top and it dares you to capture it's beauty in a single shot, inviting you to see all that it has to offer.

If you could take just one photo: Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Park; Edinburgh, Scotland

The thought of climbing a mountain never even crossed your mind when you decided to visit Scotland’s medieval capital of Edinburgh. However, after three days of haggis, potatoes, and whiskey, you begin considering a detox day. Then you see it. It is dark and looming, yet irresistible. The next morning though, it is unrecognizable. It stands vibrantly verdant against the dull grey sky. Arthur’s seat is a gentle ascent to the heavens, offering a panorama unmatched anywhere else in the city. After surveying your kingdom you feel rejuvenated. You’re already looking forward to another long night at the pub.
