Looking Upwards in Awe Inside the Slot Canyons in Page, Arizona

Sculpted over the eons by the forces of sand, wind, and water, these twisting underground caverns are prized for the changing reflections of sunlight bouncing off narrow sandstone walls. This causes shifting hues of orange, amber, pink and rust colors, as if stage lights were in use. Located inside the Navajo Indian Reservation, the favorites are both the Upper and Lower Antelope Slot Canyons, which are up to 70 feet deep, inside a literal crack of the earth. Visitors must be escorted by guides approved by the Navajo tribe.

Antelope Canyon is a striking example of nature's capacity to create staggering beauty, both enduring and ephemeral. In their ceaseless and unconscious grinding, the erosive forces of nature have scoured narrow slot canyons into the crimson rock of the desert. As you wind your way between the apparently static walls, shifting sunlight may softly diffuse down from the surface, imbued with the fiery hue of the Navajo sandstone, or slash through the dusty air in glittering rays. Fickle streams of sand may trickle down the rock, invisibly but inevitably carving spaces of palatial magnificence. A camera, tripod, and skill with a slow shutter will serve you well in your endeavors to capture beautiful images that can never approach the humbling experience of standing between the walls of this fluxing desert canyon.
