Escaping to Angel Island in Tiburon, California
From San Francisco, Angel Island looms in the distance behind Alcatraz. It usually takes a back seat to the infamous jail, but locals and tourists who decide to take the lesser-known ferry to Angel Island will be rewarded. Day trippers spread picnics and throw frisbees on the lawn near the docking terminal. Hikers who venture beyond the main drag will discover a white sand beach, abandoned forts, and a shiny new museum detailing the island's history. Make reservations for one of the island's camping spots well in advance and you can take a moonlit hike up to the top of Mount Caroline Livermore.
