Watching the Sun Set Over the Alhambra in Granada, Spain

After a day spent visiting one of world's most beautiful gardens and architectural monuments, you wind your way up through Granada's ancient Muslim neighborhood, the Albaicín, to the cobblestone San Nicolas overlook. Sipping a glass of red wine the sun blazes a trail across the sky. On the opposite hill, the Alhambra turns from gold to fire red (it's not called the Red Fort in Arabic for nothing!). The sound of a flamenco guitar lilts through the air. This is what travel is all about: history, time, and the very city of Granada have been laid at your feet.

If you could take just one photo: Alhambra

With boundless walls and ceilings made of intricately molded plaster, the Alhambra itself is a work of art. While you stroll from room to room, imagine living in this incredible Moorish palace, as members of the Nasrid Dynasty did in the 1300s when the structure was built. To avoid big crowds that get in the way of your viewing pleasure, visit during the off-peak travel season. Gazing at each awe-inspiring feature in the peaceful stillness of Alhambra will leave you longing to go back.
