Feeling the Thrill of Super-Fast Bikes in Bend, Oregon
The air is warm, the wind calm. 10,000 spectators line the streets of downtown Bend. You can feel the anticipation steaming through the streets. In the next 30 seconds, 750 pro cyclists on skinny tires are going to whip around the corner where you stand. They turn at 35 mph, toe-to-toe, wheel to-wheel, frame-to-frame. This is the former stomping ground of Lance Armstrong; the proving ground of champions-to-be. You can see the scars on their knees, the focus on their faces, courage in their hearts. The wind of their speed kisses your eyelashes 10 yards away. It’s mayhem at its most determined. 90 minutes, 4 corners, 1 winner. Bring your cowbell. The Cascade Cycling Classic Twilight Criterium has begun.
