Crashing New York's Best Open Secret in New York, NY
Half the fun is getting there. The name—79th Street Boat Basin Cafe—does say it all. The sprawling terrace restaurant is absolutely on 79th Street alongside the Hudson River. But from street-level, it's a mirage. Even a few hundred yards from the entrance only the very watery edge of the city seems to loom ahead. It takes a leap of faith to soldier on under the dank underpass and find the long circular staircase that snakes down to the palazzo-like dining area below. If life were a cartoon it'd be easier: there would be a wisp of sizzling burger-smelling smoke leading straight to the grill. It's every New Yorker's backyard patio. Dine indoors or out. Pet that cute Dalmatian. At the Boat Basin, it's always summer, and you're always home.
