If Ikea was tasked with the project to design an art museum, the end result would be the SCAD Museum of Art located in historic downtown Savannah, Ga. This former train depot was transformed into a modern showcase of design that will make you feel like you stepped out of the South and into Tokyo. Everything about the main foyer says “high tech” from the 12-foot long interactive touch pad to the row of small flat screens where patrons can “sign the guestbook.” As you enter the main exhibit area, a long corridor with red brick arches gives a glimpse of the former bones of the train depot. With exhibits from fashion, to rare books, and modern art you can see everything from Chanel to Picasso and Warhol. Exhibits range from contemporary to futuristically interactive. And if art isn’t your thing, grab a coffee at the upscale café and take a stroll upstairs. The door across from the Mapplethorpe photos leads outside to the perfectly manicured rooftop garden.
